Class Rules and Procedures

All Classroom rules are based on The ABC’s of Success posted in our classroom and the related Character Ed Program. You can find the school rules in the front of the student handbook.

Classroom Management: We have a positive and negative consequence structure in place at whole class, small group (teams), and individual levels.

The whole Class earns plus or minus points throughout the week for exceptional whole class behaviors or infractions.

Team Points (small groups) earn plus or minus points throughout the week for quick transitions, being on task, respectful interactions with others, etc.

Individuals may earn bonuses for exceptional behavior, exceptional learning connections, Working for the teacher (filing papers, cleaning up),etc. They also earn fines for individual infractions of rules.

R&R Time
R&R Time (Responsibility Reward Time) is every Friday after late recess.
On Friday, just before R&R time all points, bonuses and fines are totaled and settled. R&R points are converted to minutes of R&R time and team points are converted to class cash.

Students must have all work completed and turned in to qualify for R&R time. Students with missing homework (except for absences) and/or individual fines they cannot pay are given the opportunity to complete homework and work off their fines Friday during R&R time.

Qualifying students choose activities like legos, computers, play dough, free art, etc. for the amount of time the class has earned during the week.

Class Store (Burge-Mart) is open very other Friday during R&R Time. Students may spend their class cash to purchase small items. The children love this system. They learn to handle money and see a reward for their work. I stock the store with small items like erasers, pencils, pens, small Dollar Store and Wishing Well type toys and some candies. Students also enjoy donating items for the class store. Most gently used items that second/third graders like are appropriate.

Student Agenda/Planners go home every evening, come back every morning, Monday through Thursday, Students record their homework every afternoon and then put any homework papers for the evening in the front pocket. I check planners for recording homework daily and Spelling words on Monday.

Friday Folders and Room 13 Newsletter go home every Friday, return the following Monday or school day. Contain student work from the week, our class newsletter, weekly progress/ missing assignment reports and any other miscellaneous information. Keep the student work, newsletter, and announcements. Sign and return progress/missing assignment report in the folder on Monday.

Miscellaneous Information…

Sharing In October, with our second unit (Kindness/Friendship) we will begin Student of the Week activities. We will randomly choose a Student of the Week each week. The Student of the Week may bring “sharing” items and toys any time during that week. In the past, students have brought in toys, trophies, pets, etc.

Birthday celebrations If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday with the class by bringing treats, you may bring treats any time of the day and we will reserve 1:40 for a short celebration.

Snacks We don’t have daily whole class snacks, due to our early lunch and full schedule. However, if your child needs a mid morning boost please let me know and you may send a nutritious snack (no candy, chips, or cakes, please) and he/she may eat it during the first 5 minutes of morning recess.

Classroom Supply Donations We always need waterless hand sanitizer (used daily before lunch), tissues, dry erase markers, highlighters, washable colored markers, and items for our class store.
